My childhood = The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom (the sponsor's name was always said with the title), Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, and ABC's Wild World of Sports.
My father vaguely disapproved of fiction as a waste of time. We weren't forbidden from watching our cartoons and Star Trek reruns et cetera, but the parents rarely sat down and watched those things with us. So family TV consisted largely of documentary programs. (Mister Rogers was the only kids' show that he thought had any merit. It always kind of impressed me that my dad the TV-snob gave Fred Rogers his seal of approval.)
